Presidency deliberately delayed INEC budget for 7 months just to blame us - Senator Abaribe

- Eyinnaya Abaribe alleges that the INEC budget had been with the presidency for seven months

- Abaribe maintains that the presidency's pressure on the Senate to resume is meant to embarrass the lawmakers

- He further says a committee has been set up to look at the budget and consider it for passage

Eyinnaya Abaribe, a Nigerian senator and chairman of the committee on power and steel at the upper chamber, on Thursday, August 16, said the presidency’s call for the National Assembly to resume was not necessary.

According to Abaribe, the presidency is pressuring for the reconvening of the lawmakers in a bid to blame them before Nigerians.

NAIJ.com learnt that Abaribe spoke on Channels Television alleging that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had, since January 2018, sent its proposed budget to the presidency. He claimed that this was, however, delayed.

He said: “INEC sent its own budget for the election in January to the presidency."

“From January to the point we were to leave in July nothing was done, the week before we left on Tuesday, the presidency sent a letter asking us to look into the matter. What were they doing all these seven months?

“All this brouhaha was unnecessary.”

He also said there was no need for the pressure on the senators to resume since a committee had been set up to look into the budget and approve it.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, and other top officials, were quizzed by members of the House of Representatives committee on electoral and political party matters, over the budget of the 2019 general elections.

The INEC chairman was also grilled by the Senate committee on INEC over the same issue.

NAIJ.com also reported that the Nigeria Senate expressed concern over alleged discrepancies in the 2019 elections budget figures presented by President Buhari and chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu.
