Mahmood Yakubu in another crucial meeting with Senate over 2019 elections' budget

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has appeared before the joint committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives on INEC to defend the commission’s proposed budget for the 2019 general elections.

He was also accompanied by the minister of national planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, on Friday, August 17, for the meeting seen as crucial to the forthcoming general elections, The Punch reports.

Shortly after the meeting commenced, chairman of the joint committee, Senator Suleiman Nazif, reiterated the committee’s resolve to ensure that INEC got all that was needed to ensure a hitch-free 2019 general elections.

"We are not playing politics with the budget for the 2019 elections. We just want some clarifications," he said.

NAIJ.com had earlier reported that a previous meeting members of the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives held with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the budget for the 2019 elections ended in a stalemate on Thursday, August 16.

The stalemate followed the inability of the joint committee to reconcile disparities between the N189bn budget submitted by the electoral body and the N143bn contained in the president’s letter to the National Assembly on the same subject.

Against this backdrop, the lawmakers have re-invited the national chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, to appear before it on Friday, August 17, to further clarify discrepancies noticed in its 2019 election budget.
