- The PDP candidate for the Katsina North senatorial district by-election, Alhaji Kabir Babba-Kaita, has accused the APC of buying votes to secure victory for its candidate, who is his younger brother
- He said the development does not speak well of a ruling party which is claiming to be fighting corruption
- According to Kaita, the APC resolved to massive vote-buying during the election because they knew people would not vote for them
Alhaji Kabir Babba-Kaita, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s candidate in the August 11 Katsina North senatorial district by-election, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) bought votes in order to secure victory for its candidate, Ahmad Babba-Kaita, who also happens to be his younger brother.
In an interview with Punch, the older Kaita alleged that the APC spent over N1 billion to win that election alone.
NAIJ.com gathers that he bashed the ruling party for buying votes in such an undemocratic manner.
He stated: “The APC government, both at the state and at the federal levels, was involved in vote buying. I did not lose that election.
“It was widely in circulation that over N1bn was (allegedly) used by the ruling party, (the APC) on that election alone. Half a million naira was also said to have been (allegedly) earmarked for each of the 1,825 polling units in the senatorial district.
“This huge amount of money was supposed to be used to enhance the lives of the people of the state. Instead, the money was wrongly used to buy votes and in a very, very undemocratic manner.
“This development actually, does not speak well of a ruling party, which is claiming to be fighting corruption. This has clearly shown that corruption is at its peak by what we saw at the polling units on that day, during the election.”
When asked how sure he was that it was indeed the APC that allegedly bought the votes, and not his brother, Kaita stated: “I believe the APC candidate at the election who is my younger brother does not have the kind of money spent during the election.
“I believe the APC government; both at the state and the federal levels, were responsible for the huge money spent for their so-called victory. And this was borne out of their fears that I was going to win the election as they knew that I was popular in the senatorial district. They knew I was a threat to them.”
He continued: “During the campaigns for the election, people booed them virtually in all the 12 councils that make up the senatorial district.
“They were sent away at Mashi, Zanngo, Dutse and Ingawa, among others, by the electorates since people have not seen any changes which the APC promised them during the 2015 campaigns.
“People were dissatisfied because of the non-performance of the government. That was why they (APC government) resolved to massive vote-buying during the election; because they knew people would not vote for them.”
Recall that NAIJ.com previously reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Katsina state declared Alhaji Ahmed Babba-Kaita of the All Progressives Congress, as the winner of the by-election conducted in the Katsina North senatorial district.
Prof Hudu Ayuba-Abdullahi, the returning officer, who announced the result at 4:42am in Daura, said Kaita, a member of the House of Representatives scored 224,607 votes, while his elder brother and a retired customs officer, Alhaji Kabir Babba Kaita of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 59,724 votes.
