- A faction of the APC defied an Abuja high court restraining the ruling party from conducting state congress to elect new executives
- The faction led by Clement Ebri, former governor of Cross River state, conducted the congress where they elected parallel officials for the state executive of the party
- The NWC of APC in Cross River had ordered for a fresh election, which the Godwin Etim John’s faction disagreed with and headed to court
The Cross River state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Wednesday, August 22, defied an Abuja high court order ruling to hold state congress few days after the party and members of National Working Committee (NWC) were barred from conducting another congress.
NAIJ.com gathered that the faction of the party gathered at Nkonib Hall in Iko Ansa about 6a.m.,to conduct the congress where they elected parallel officials for the state executive of the party against those elected in May during the nationwide congresses of the party.
This development has compounded the lingering crisis which has bedeviled the party in the state for months and may make it hard to resolve despite the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
The party now remains polarised between the Ntufam Hilliard Eta-led faction with Dr Matthew Achigbe as state chairman, and Pastor Usani Usani’s group which produced Godwin John as chairman of the party during the May congress.
Recall that the NWC had, few weeks ago ordered for a fresh election, which the Godwin Etim John’s faction disagreed with and headed to court. They obtained an injunction restraining the APC from nullifying the already conducted state congress. The court said it was only the national convention of the party which could do so.
Henry Idahagbon, the chairman of the new congress committee, said it had become necessary to end all forms of contest for the soul of the party in the state so as to the make APC a strong contender for the governorship seat in Cross River.
NAIJ.com previously reported that the rescheduled local government congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River went bloody when a woman returning from farm and 10 others were reportedly shot in Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr region of the state on Wednesday, May 17.
It all began when alleged rival factions loyal to Usani Usani, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Clement Ebri, the former governor of the state respectively, both from the area, engaged each other in a gory gun battle, Vanguard reports.
Reporting the incident to newsmen, a source who wished to remain unnamed said: “The two sides were arguing over the delegates list. This degenerated into a confrontation and subsequently a gun battle. Many people were shot and a woman who was returning from farm was hit by a stray bullet.”
