Stop assaulting your wife it's evil - Cleric tells men

A cleric, Pastor Joshua Adeoye, on Thursday, August 23, advised men against assaulting their wives in view of its psychological effect on them.

Adeoye of Good News Church of Christ, Ilorin in Kwara, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin. He described such behaviour as “evil’’.

According to him, assault on women is almost becoming a way of life in the society, as most men have no respect for their wives.

Some men assault their wives in the public, not minding the effect. They have the sick mentality that their wives are their property and can be treated anyhow.

“When you beat or insult a woman, it lasts in their memory; they will not be able to concentrate and properly carry out their daily activities. Women are not slaves, they are help mates. Men must learn to regard their wives as weaker vessels.

Africans must emulate the western world by according some measures of respect to the womenfolk. The rights of women are well protected in most advanced countries unlike Africa, where women are being treated as slaves," he said.

Adeoye, however, called on the government at all levels, the media and religious leaders to join in the campaign against the maltreatment of women for the society to move forward.
