- Bayelsa government has imposed a curfew on Twon Brass
- The government’s action followed the violent incident in the town which claimed three people’s lives
- The curfew will last from 9pm to 6am daily until ‘peace returns to the community’
The Bayelsa state government on Friday, August 24, imposed a curfew on Twon Brass, a town in Brass local government area of the state, where three were killed on Wednesday, August 15.
The deputy governor of the state, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha Jonah retired, told a news conference in Yenagoa that the curfew would last from 9pm to 6am daily, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
He condemned the killing, which was blamed on political thugs at Ada-Ama Square in Twon Brass, saying that the curfew would be lifted only when peace returned to the community.
“The state government has gathered that the violence was sponsored by some individuals for political purposes.
“We have directed law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the activities of the hoodlums and ensure the prosecution of all persons that may be found culpable,” Jonah said.
The spokesman of the Bayelsa state police command, DSP Asinim Butswat, had earlier said that the incident involved suspected thugs who claimed to be members of the APC and PDP in Brass.
“We have commenced investigation to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the crisis. We advise people to go about their normal activities,” said Butswat.
Earlier, NAIJ.com reported that the clash between supporters of the APC and those of the PDP in Twon Brass local government area of Bayelsa state led to the deaths of three persons.
Though, both sides have given conflicting reasons for the attacks which occurred on Monday, August 20, one of those killed was identified as spokesman of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC).
While sources close to the PDP supporters claimed that the three persons were killed when they attempted to assassinate the caretaker chairman of Brass local council area, Victoria Isiah, the APC supporters claimed that the deaths occurred when some members of the IYC challenged over 10-armed men suspected to have been hired by the PDP from the neighbouring Odioma community.
