Soldiers invade Rivers communities after colleague’s death

- Soldiers have invaded communities in Rivers state

- The soldiers were said to be agitated over the killing of one of their colleagues during a kidnap attempt in Abua-Odual local government area

- They allegedly harassed and arrested some residents of the communities during the invasion

Some soldiers serving in Rivers state have invaded some communities in Abua, Abua-Odual local government area of the state following the killing of one of their colleagues.

According to a report by Punch, a soldier, a police officer and a civilian were killed during a failed kidnap attempt on two expatriate workers of an oil company.

Reports said the soldier in a swift response to the killing of their colleagues stormed the communities as early as 4am on Saturday, August 25.

It was gathered that these soldiers harassed and intimidated residents while also restricting movement within the communities.

A resident of one of the communities, Omelema, said the soldiers chased and arrested residents in the early hours of Saturday.

The resident who pleaded anonymity said: “I was surprised to see the soldiers everywhere; some were stopping okada riders and arresting them together with their bikes. Others were forcing everyone to sit on the ground – both the young and the old.”

Another resident said after taking control of the local government headquarters, the soldiers proceeded to Okpeden south area of the local government, where their colleague was killed.

They added that the soldiers later withdrew from the communities at about 10.15am and released some of the residents arrested.

Inquiry from the Nigerian Army was futile as the spokesperson for the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, said he was not in town and would speak on the matter later.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that there was commotion on Thursday morning, May 17, along Ada George Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers state as soldiers sacked the Rumukpakani police station.

The soldiers were at the police station over the alleged killing of their colleague by a police officer.

It was also gathered that the murdered soldier, who was in mufti, was said to have been shot near the police station by one of the policemen on duty.
