A former head of state, Ibrahim Babangida, has thrown his weight behind a presidential aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki.

Speaking while playing host to the PDP presidential aspirant at his residence in Minna, Niger state, Babangida said, Nigeria’s Unity must not be compromised.

Babangida said: "Your road map can lead Nigeria to prosperity. We are taught in the Military that the Unity of Nigeria must not be compromised. The programmes in your agenda are capable of transforming Nigeria.
“From your agenda, I believe you mean well for this country. I think if you are given the chance Nigeria will witness tremendous development. Nigeria has never been so divided. Even though I have adopted you and you emerge as the President I will follow you up so that if you derail, I will remind you of your promises.”
The presidential aspirant who was also on a sensitisation visit to PDP stakeholders in Niger state gave Babangida details of how he intend to tackle insecurity, the decline in national security, worsened economy as well as increasing unemployment among the youths.
He solicited the support of the former military president for the realisation of his 2019 presidential ambition.
"If voted into power I will implement policies and programmes that will bring smiles to the faces of Nigerians. I have all that is needed to improve the country. Insecurity is now spreading to Sokoto, Niger, Kebbi, in fact not less than 22 states in the country are under one form of insecurity or the other," he said.
Turaki further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing Nigerians.
“I blame the APC government for opening door for theft of public funds. Corruption in public offices are more now than during the PDP.
"They (APC) had accused the PDP of corruption and insecurity, but now that they were given the opportunity, they failed. They could not curtail the Boko Haram menace which has even transcended to what we call killer herdsmen who have now infiltrated many states," he said.
Turaki further headed to Benin Edo state where he met with delegates and members of the PDP.
In Benin, the former minister of special duties and inter governmental affairs said the party needs to pick someone with integrity and credibility as its presidential candidate if it must win the 2019 presidential election.
Turaki said he was eminently qualified to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari come 2019.
He said that Nigeria needs not only an experienced and a well-educated candidate but also a bridge builder who does not have controversial character. He said such a candidate must not be known to have taken advantage of the system when he was given the opportunity to serve.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Turaki had called for the respect for the rule of law in Nigeria by those in authority.
Turaki said rule of law is sacrosanct and he cannot be selective about that. He also said that Nigerian now look up to PDP as the bibilical Noah's Ark which can redeem the country.
