- A former governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has rejected the proposed consensus over the PDP's presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 general polls
- Bafarawa, in Abuja on Wednesday, August 29, said that in a democratic setting, such a move is unnecessary
- He further said that the proposal will make the party crumble just like the APC
Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, an ex-governor of Sokoto state has said that there should not be a consensus among the rising number of presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Daily Trust reports.
Bafarawa, having obtained his expression of interest and nomination forms to contest the presidential ticket of the party ahead of the 2019 general polls at the PDP's national secretariat in Abuja, remarked that the number of presidential aspirants indicated the party's growing strength.
Speaking with newsmen concerning the said consensus, the former governor said: "I think you people are not interested in democracy. If we are talking of consensus at least, we are players. I expected you to be good watchers of the playing ground so that you can see how the game is going to play.
"If we say that we are going for consensus, what are we going to do with it? We agree we are all brothers. We see it as a game. Therefore, if anybody is interested in withdrawing himself from the race, it's a welcome idea.
"But talking of consensus you are going to fall like APC where we are going to have a one-man show. We don't want to go for one-man show. We want to practise democracy so that people will choose their own better candidate. For example, if APC is playing democracy, they will allow at least, three to four aspirants to aspire for the position."
Bafarawa stated that all the aspirants were democrats, adding that whoever wants to step down is free to do so. He stated that the aspirants would accept the outcome of the primaries and work with the eventual flag bearer with the common objective of defeating the ruling party.
