APC using thugs to attack our members - PDP raises alarm

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of violently interfering in its activities. The party claimed thugs from the ruling APC stormed its headquarters and attacked its members.

In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, it national publicity secretary, the PDP warned Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the APC, to rein in his party’s thugs.

The PDP claimed the APC detailed the thugs to disrupt activities at its national secretariat in Abuja.

But Yekini Nabena, the national publicity secretary of the APC, told NAIJ.com that "it was the stupidity of the PDP" that caused the crisis.

According to Nabena, the PDP had sponsored a crowd but at the end, could not meet with the terms of payment and there was violence at the headquarters of the party.

"What has APC got to do with that? Nigerians are tired of this sympathy they are looking for. They sponsored a crowd and could not meet up with the payment and this resulted in a crisis," Nabena told NAIJ.com.

The PDP said it understands that the APC has been distraught over the renewed surge of Nigerians to its platform, which signposts its inevitable victory in the 2019 election.

It, however, accused the ruling party of resorting to banditry and violent attack on our secretariat is a handshake taken beyond the elbow and will not be tolerated.

“The whole world witnessed with dismay, how APC thugs, brandishing their party’s famished brooms and charms; armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons stormed our national secretariat which has become a beehive of activities and attacked and wounded our members and supporters before they were dispelled by security operatives.

“The PDP had repeatedly warned against APC’s proclivity for violence and unprovoked attacks, but we never imagined that their desperation for power will drive them to the insanity of attacking our national secretariat.

“Intelligence report available to the PDP shows that the thugs were assembled and mobilized from the National Secretariat of the APC.

“We therefore charge security agencies, who also witnessed this attack, to immediately investigate this development, arrest and prosecute all individuals and officials of APC connected with the attack.

“Moreover, the unleashing of thugs by the APC against our law-abiding party members and supporters, is particularly revealing of those behind some of the violent attacks on innocent Nigerians in various parts of the country.

“Finally, while the PDP appreciates the overwhelming support by Nigerian's across board, our party restates the determination to dismantle all forces of intimidation and rigging machinery of the APC ahead of the 2019 general elections,” the party said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state has stated that he is confident President Muhammadu Buhari would win the 2019 presidential election for a second term in office.

Akeredolu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Buhari had done well and deserved to be re-elected, in spite of obvious challenges facing the country.

His words: “I followed the achievements he (Buhari) has had within this four short years but he’s not someone that is given to making noise.

"A lot has changed in our country and there’s need for continuity; no doubt, we have had our challenges. No doubt, at the tail end, a number of challenges came about on security."
