- A former minister, Okoh Eyakenyi, spoke about Akwa Ibom governor's chances of being re-elected in 2019
- She said the former governor Akpabio's defection cannot reduce Governor Udom's chance in the state
- She, however, said that it is unfortunate that Senator Akpabio defected to the APC
A former minister of land, housing and urban development in the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Akon Eyakenyi, has expressed confidence in Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom state getting re-elected come 2019.
Eyakenyi who said this in an interview with Vanguard added that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be more stronger without their former governor, Akpabio, who recently defected to the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC).
NAIJ.com gathers that the former minister is also a strong contender for the Akwa Ibom south senatorial seat for this 2019 election.
When asked about the possibility of Akpabio's defection creating an impediment for the re-election of governor Udom, Eyakenyi said: "One thing is making one a king and the other is standing by the king to go through his tenure successfully."
"It is unfortunate that senator Akpabio took the decision to defect to the APC. He had his personal reasons best known to him; the only thing he said was that he was going to play national politics. I wish him well because he is an Akwa Ibom son. During his time he did well for Akwa Ibom people. His moving apart does not in any way and will not in any way stop Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel from doing his second term like he, Akpabio, did."
Eyakenyi also praised the state's incumbent governor, saying he is a divine gift for the people of the state: "Udom Gabriel Emmanuel is a divine gift to the people of Akwa Ibom state and so far, I must confirm and confess that he has done well and deserves to continue the good work that he has started."
"Udom needs the additional four years to complete the works he has started. Udom has touched lives in Akwa Ibom state, he has fulfilled his promises of industrialization, of inclusiveness, touching education and carried the people of Akwa Ibom state along."
