- INEC has commended members of its staff who swam in two rivers and a stream in Bauchi state to deliver election materials
- The INEC staff were said to have won hearts of Nigerians, having braved rivers to deliver the eessential materials
- INEC boss, Mahmood Yakub, affirmed that the commission is ready to encourage its staff loyal to their work
The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it was pleased by the level of passion and patriotism displayed by two of its staff recently in Bauchi, adding that it would honour them for their valiant and commendable loyalty.
Vanguard reports that two of the INEC personnel braved two rivers and a stream in order to deliver the election materials at a polling unit during the last last Bauchi south senatorial election.
NAIJ.com gathers that the promise was made by the chairman of the election commision, Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday, September 6, during the maiden award event held in Abuja for the staff of the commission.
The INEC boss said: "Our staff are among the most dedicated in the public service in Nigeria. I have no doubt about this. Where necessary, the commission has condemned staff who ran foul of her processes and procedures but condemnation of staff makes no sense outside the context of commendation.
"The extent to which some of our staff go to ensure that polling units open at 8am and elections are conducted is simply amazing. In one of the elections we conducted recently, in one of the local government areas, I think in Bauchi south senatorial district, one of our staff swam across two rivers and walked across a stream in order to get to our polling unit."
I have asked the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to send details of that staff. We are going to write a letter of commendation to him. Other parameters being equal, such staff will qualify for the awards next time but for this time, that person deserves a letter of commendation from the commission."
Mahmood also said that members of the commission's staff who show integrity with duty will be duly honoured by the commission.
He said: "INEC is what it is on account of the quality and dedication of its staff. The staff make INEC. Therefore, every opportunity that we have to celebrate our staff is something that this commission would always support, not only open-handedly but support in every legitimate way. It is not just the fact that our terms and conditions of service provide for this kind of awards once in a year but it is also the proper thing to do, taking into cognizance the number of chairmen of INEC that we have had."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that INEC on Monday, September 3, dismissed allegations that it made registration for the Permanent Voter Cards (PCVs) difficult for eligible Nigerians.
Solomon Soyebi, INEC’s national commissioner for voter education and publicity, said the allegations are far from the truth, adding that the commission made the exercise comfortable and convenient for voters.
He said that complaints from Nigerians did not indicate any fault on the agency's part.
