- Spain captain Sergio Ramos is rooting for his Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric to win FIFA The Best award
- Croatia's Modric alongside Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah are the final three players contending for the prize
- Ramos claims his teammate Modric has done well enough to win the award over his contenders
Real Madrid superstar Sergio Ramos has thrown his weight behind teammate Luka Modric to win The Best FIFA Men's Player award.
The Croatian captain was part of the Los Blancos team that won the UEFA Champions League three times on a row.
He also inspired his national team to their first ever FIFA World Cup final where they lost 4-2 to eventual winners France in Russia in July.
The Spanish national team captain feels the Croatian has done well enough to be crowned the best in the world.
Modric was earlier crowned the best player in Europe after beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to the prestigious award.
Portugal star Ronaldo is gunning for his third consecutive FIFA award but was unable to help his national team avoid crashing out of the World Cup at the second round stage.
Meanwhile, Ramos believes the former Manchester United doesn't deserve to win the award.
He mentioned, in particular, a player with 'more marketing' than Modric who did not deserve to win.
"There are few players that I am as proud of having in my team as [Modric],' said Ramos , according to ESPN.
"He is a great friend and a great player. He is one of the few players who [if he wins] would make me as happy as if they had given it to me."
He continued that: "Maybe there are players with more marketing, with a bigger name but Modric deserves that award."
When asked if his comments were aimed at someone, the Real Madrid defender said that they were not, there can be little doubt about who he was referring to.
"I will not answer Mendes,' Ramos reportedly said when asked about the comments.
"Everyone has his opinion. It is respectable. Flattery and criticism are always in our profession.
"Everyone can say what they want but in my opinion the prize to Modric is very well deserved."
The Juventus star scored 44 goals in all competitions last term - 15 of those were from the Champions League.
He also scored superb goals at the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup before being ousted in the round of 16 of the tournament.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah on the other hand had an impressive season - helping the Reds reach the final of the tourney for the first time in 11 years and winning several awards in the Premier League with 32 goals.
The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony will take place in London on September 24.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric was named the UEFA player of the year at a ceremony held in France on Thursday evening, August 30.
The Croatia international beat Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah to win the UEFA award in Monaco.
Last season, Luka Modric was superb for Real Madrid helping them to win the 2017/18 Champions League title beating Liverpool in the final in Kiev.
