- Senator Abe-led faction in the state had also adopted direct primaries to pick its candidates, days after Amachree's faction adopted indirect primaries

- Both factions have started selling expression of intent /nomination forms to the party's members who are interested in contesting for elective positions under the party

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Senator Magnus Abe in Rivers state on Monday, September 10, officially adopted direct primaries for electing candidates as against the indirect mode adopted by the Ojukaye Flag-Amachree-led faction in the state.

NAIJ.com regional reporter in Port Harcourt, Tony Ihunwo, reports that during a stakeholders meeting held at its factional secretariat in Waterlines junction, Port Harcourt, its acting chairman, Peter Odike, declared that the Ojukaye Flag-Amachree-led APC adopted the indirect primaries method as directed by Amaechi so as to impose his preferred candidate, Tonye Cole, on the members of the party and the people of the state.

He said: "We are asking all peace loving APC members to key into the direct primaries method because Abia, Bayelsa have adopted it, I don't know why one man will want to impose indirect primaries on the people because he knows that his preferred candidate is unpopular. The only method that can unite the two factions is the adoption of direct primaries to chose our candidates."

Odike also noted in a communique he personally signed and made available to NAIJ.com said commended the party national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, in his efforts to entrench internal and participatory democracy in the party through the approval of the use of direct primaries as the mode of selecting candidates for election.

"The State Executive Committee (SEC) commends His Excellency Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great party on their recent decision to entrench internal and participatory democracy in the party through the approval of the use of direct primaries as the mode of selecting candidates for election in our party.

"The SEC commends the president of the federal republic of Nigeria and commander in chief of the arm forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for repositioning Nigeria for continued greatness. The Rivers state chapter of All Progressives Congress is grateful to Mr. President for his style of leadership which has rekindled our belief and hope in Democracy.

"The State Executive Committee unanimously adopt and affirms the use of direct primaries for choosing all our candidates, in the forthcoming 2019 elections, as it affords party members the opportunity to participate in the process. The above decision are in consonance with party's position, and desire to make election in 2019 and beyond, reflective of the will and aspirations of the people.

"We restate our confidence and unflinching support for the leadership of H.E Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of our great Party and President Muhammadu Buhari."

Also speaking about the choice of direct primaries, Senator Magnus Abe, who is also a governorship aspirant reiterated that the reason given by the Ojukaye Flag-Amachree faction for opting for the indirect primaries is based on the logistical difficulty in assembling all bonafide members of APC across the state for direct primaries to choose their preferred candidates.

It was gathered that the Senator Abe-led faction of APC on Monday, September 10, started selling expression of intent /nomination forms to the party's members who are interested in contesting for elective positions under the party.
