- George Weah has named three ex-Super Eagles players he looked up to as a younger footballer
- The Liberian president also highlighted Nigeria's contributions to African football
- Weah remains the only African football star to claim World Footballer of the Year award
President of the Republic of Liberia George Oppong Weah has revealed three former Super Eagles stars he idolized while growing up even as he was quick to appreciate Nigeria’s contribution to the development of the sports.
Reacting moments after the Eagles claimed a 2-1 win over Liberia’s Lone Star in Tuesday night’s exhibition match at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Weah, a former World Footballer of the Year, went down memory lane, to recap how he drew inspiration from Nigerian Football back in the days.
“As a young, upcoming footballer, I was always fascinated by Nigeria’s football stars.
“I looked up to the likes of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, Friday Ekpo and others and believed that the African footballer can also get to the very top.
“I believe that in Africa, somewhere, there is another Ballon D’Or winner.
“We have to find him, expose him to the world and give him the opportunity to actualize his dream,” noted Weah, who emerged African, European and World Footballer of the Year in 1995.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday night, September 11, defeated Liberia 2-1 in an international friendly match which was played to retire the number 14 jersey of President George Weah.
Henry Onyekuru who made a return to the Super Eagles scored the first goal in the 11th minute after a brilliant assist from John Ogu.
Simeon Nwankwo netted the second goal for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 33rd minute as he gained from a superb corner kick played by Etebo.
Liberia scored their only goal in the 89th minute via a penalty through Palsama, but they could not score the needed goal that would have saved them from a defeat as Nigeria won the match 2-1.
