Cross Rivers state has been thrown into pandemonium as not less than five persons including a police sergeant, Jude Ndi, were reportedly killed by armed robbers during a raid in Cross Rivers state.
The Punch reports that that the incident which happened on Sunday, September 16, around the Utugwang axis of Obudu local government area of Cross River state was caused by robbers who wore the Police Mobile Force (PMF) uniforms with the insignia of the command to rob the passengers and local residents.
NAIJ.com gathers that the the gang of robbers fled though not without a gun injury.
An eye witness stated: "We gathered that they robbed in Ogoja, attacked some Fulani people and made away with huge sums of money and when they were chased, they ran into hiding in the boundary between Utugwang in Obudu and Mbube in Ogoja.
“The robbers emerged from hiding on Wednesday and shot one person dead. They collected the victim’s car, a Volkswagen Golf, and drove into Utugwang, where they were resisted by the locals.
“The youths formed a barricade and began throwing stones at them. This provoked them and one of the suspected armed robbers came down asking them why they were attacking government personnel and in the process they shot another person dead instantly.
“The other boys ran but the robbers chased them into one building and opened fire, killing two others on the spot.”
It was also gathered that the robbers, having robbed Ogoja, in Ogoja local government area of Cross River state, procedded to Obudu. After robbing their victims in the community walked down close to the Utugwang market where a team of mobile police led by a police officer, Jude Ndi, engaged them in a due.In the process, Jude was reportedly killed while other officers were wounded.
The Cross River state police public relations officer (PPRO), Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident. She added that the command's effort to arrest the pepetrators was dashed as they escaped to a neighbouring state, Benue through their car with with plate SDA 559 XA.
She said: "The suspected armed robbers, in police uniform, had operated around Ogoja axis on Tuesday. They had a gun battle with policemen but managed to escape. They went on to Obudu to continue their operations the next day. They were also confronted, unfortunately, a police sergeant was killed."
“Two other policemen sustained gun wounds. The robbers too had gun wounds but they escaped to neighbouring Benue State. The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr Hafiz Inuwa, contacted his Benue State counterpart on the development."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that in a case similar to this, a police officer serving with the Nasarawa police command was shot dead by suspected armed robbers along Akwanga-Wamba road in the state.
The police public relations officer, Samaila Usman, who confirmed the incident said the police patrol along the axis ran into a road block mounted by the suspected criminals and a gun battle ensued. One of the officers sustained injury as a result of the incident and later died at the hospital.
A member of the gang was however killed while others escaped with bullet wounds.
