APC, PDP members reportedly clash ahead of Osun rerun election

- A chieftain of the PDP, Fatai Oyedele, popularly known as Diekola, is accused of buying PVCs in Alekuwodo area of Osun state

- But the party insists the accused chieftain was canvassing for votes and not buying voters cards as being alleged

- Senator Omisore gives his condition ahead of the Osun gubernatorial election rerun

There has been a reported clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and those of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over an alleged move by a politician to buy Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of Thursday, September 27, Osun governorship election rerun in four council areas in the state.

The Nation stated that the said clash reportedly occurred on Monday, September 24, after a chieftain of the PDP, Fatai Oyedele, popularly known as Diekola, allegedly led some leaders of his party to ward 5, unit 17 in Alekuwodo to allegedly buy up voters cards.

The police are said to have arrested the PDP stalwart for the alleged conduct, but the party has insisted that he was canvassing for votes and not buying PVCs as being alleged.

An eyewitness told the newspaper that agents and leaders of the APC and the PDP came to ward 5, unit 17 in Alekuwodo to woo would-be voters before the said clash occurred.

However, the Osun state APC spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi, was quick to deny that his party’s supporters were involved in any clash. He also claimed that the PDP chieftain, Oyedele, was caught in possession of 62 PVCs.

“There was nothing like thugs attacking anybody. That is absolute nonsense. We don’t have thugs. He was caught with PVCs and the Civil Defence officials arrested him,” Oyatomi said.

In a counter claim, the PDP director, media and publicity, Ademola Adeleke campaign organisation, Olawale Rasheed, alleged that Oyedele and cores of supporters of the PDP in the area where the rerun election will be held were attacked by APC thugs.

The Nation stated that the reported incident could not be confirmed from the police the phone number of the Osun state police spokesperson was, Folashade Odoro, was switched off.

Meanwhile, Senator |Iyiola Omisore who is the candidate of the Social Democratic Party has given his condition for supporting either Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adeleke of the PDP had 254,698 while the candidate of APC, Oyetola, polled 254,345 thereby forcing the election into a rerun after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the result inconclusive.

Senate president, Bukola Saraki, met with Omisore on Monday, September 24 to seek the SDP candidate’s support. The Punch reports that Omisore said he would only support the candidate that agrees to pay salaries and pension.
