- An anonymous chieftain of the PDP has reportedly alleged that the southwest is being marginalised by the party’s presidential aspirants
- He said none of the aspirants have displayed any inclination to pick a running mate from the zone; and warned that they are making a grave mistake
- The chieftain reminded the party’s leaders of the contributions of the zone; pointing put that the PDP needs the southwest in 2019
Presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been accused by a chieftain of the party, of deliberately marginalising the southwest geopolitical zone in their quest to occupy the nation’s highest political office in 2019.
According to Vanguard, the chieftain, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, alleged that so far, none of the 13 aspirants have expressed any inclination to picking a running mate from the southwest.
NAIJ.com learnt that while expressing concern over the alleged development, the chieftain stressed that the zone will not be satisfied with anything less than the vice presidential slot, as it is prepared to go the whole mile to ensure that the party is victorious in 2019.
He reportedly stated: “They (aspirants) are making a serious mistake. In December 2017 during the elective convention, the south-west was shortchanged and denied the opportunity of producing the national chairman.
“Elections are around the corner and none of them has shown readiness to look at the south-west for a running mate. This portend crisis for the party and I make bold to say that since the leadership of our party zoned the presidency to the North, anything short of the vice presidency will not be acceptable to the south-west."
The chieftain urged the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, to remember how the southwest has been instrumental to the party’s growth since its formation in 1998.
He added: “APC will be sent packing in 2019 and to do that, the PDP needs the southwest. Even though they say we lost Ekiti, the whole world knows we won and if not for their manipulations, the story would have been different. All the same, we are sure of reclaiming our mandate in the court.
“We again demonstrated strength in last Saturday’s (September 22) governorship election in Osun state. PDP is back to take power in the whole of south-west and one can only wish that the aspirants are being well guided.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwaso, a former governor of Kano state and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), wants the party to consider zoning the presidency to the northwest in the forthcoming 2019 elections.
While addressing PDP delegates and members in Benin, Edo state, Kwankwaso said the northwest is the most populous region in the country.
