Newspaper review: Nigeria prepared to help Sudan stabilise - Buhari

The headlines of mainstream Nigerian newspapers for October 3, 2018, are on the controversy that surrounded the Lagos state All Progressives Congress (APC) primary held on Tuesday, October 2 amongst other top stories.

Vanguard reports that controversy, yesterday, trailed the rescheduled governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos state as the panel of the National Working Committee, of the party, distanced itself from the earlier exercise conducted and fix today for a fresh primary.

The NWC APC nullified the governorship primary, saying due process was not followed. The panel’s decision was, however, faulted by the state chapter of the party which insisted the exercise was credible.

The Nation reports that the federal government has appealed to accountants and auditors to assist it in fighting corruption.

President Muhammad Buhari made the call while addressing the 48th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Abuja.

Buhari, who was represented by the minister of national planning and budget, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, noted that “with regards to fighting corruption, you have a special contribution to make as accountants in this regard”.

“Your members serving as accountants and auditors can bring to bear your special skills in ensuring that books and records are properly kept. Working closely with the statutory agencies responsible for fighting corruption, ICAN will no doubt assist government in its effort at fighting this national malaise,” the president said.

Buhari urged ICAN members to deliberate on how they could contribute to support government’s efforts at reducing corruption, restoring the economy and ensuring security.

The Guardian reports that as the organised labour pushes forward its demand for a new national minimum wage, opinions are varied regarding the timeliness of the demand, which resulted in a warning strike following a breakdown in negotiations among committee members.

According to some of the views, embarking on a strike in a pre-election period is not a good sign that demand would be immediately met, as majority of the governors, who would implement the agreements, would be out of office by 2019 at the expiration of their two terms, while those hoping for a second term are still struggling to get their parties’ nomination.
