In the wake of Sunshine Stars’ ouster from this year’s Caf Champions League, Mike Idoko, the Executive Director of Ondo State Football Agency, has revealed that his team shot themselves in the foot after recording a not too impressive 3-3 draw in the first leg against Al Ahly in Ijebu Ode.
In an exclusive interview with Goal.com after the team touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International airport from Egypt, Idoko said the loss was orchestrated by the first leg failure to win.
“We lost the match in the first leg, no thanks to the 3-3 draw we recorded at Ijebu Ode. If we had won on home soil, it would have been a different tale,” Idoko said.
He however praised his boys for their impressive display at the Cairo Military Academy Stadium where they lost 1-0 on Sunday to finish 4-3 on aggregate.
“My boys played very well and dominated the game for quite some minutes but luck was not on our side. We could have upset our hosts but the woodwork did not help matters. Overall, it wasn’t a bad outing for us and we will build on this.”
The Akure-based team went into the match with the hope of becoming the first Nigerian club to qualify for the final of the biggest club competition in Africa as debutants.
Ahmed Nagy Geddo’s 28th minute strike was the difference between both sides in the second leg. The Egyptian giants will now play against Esperance in the final next month.
