Four people died and several people were injured yesterday as Kisumu residents clashed with police during the demonstrations to protest the killing of Kwega.
Kwega and his wife were shot by thugs along Robert Ouko Road yesterday morning. The couple and a relative were on their way to the bank when the incident occurred.
Witnesses said the thugs attacked Kwega as he slowed down on a bump and tried to force the vehicle's door open. In the ensuing scuffle, Kwega's car veered off the road and landed in a ditch.
The thugs shot the passengers several times and stole an unknown amount of money before escaping. The getaway car was found abandoned at Chiga area.
Kwega was pronounced dead upon his arrival at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. His wife was admitted into the intensive care unit. The news of his death sparked riots in the town with residents storming the Kondele police station and threatened to eject OCS Bernard Muriuki accusing him of failing to curb rising insecurity in the town.
Kisumu has faced a spate of violent crimes in recent weeks. The fatal shooting of Kwega comes after the murder of a doctor on Sunday night.
Doctor Joseph Odhiambo of the Centre of Disease Control was shot to death by gangsters in Tom Mboya estate in Kisumu. Police have ruled out politics in the murder of Shem Kwega. CIO Joseph Mugwanja said investigations into the incident are still on going.
