A murder suspect who allegedly connived with his girlfriend to murder her husband, Fuckson Dube (54), in a bid to pave way for their marriage reportedly committed suicide in police cell after realising that their plan had hit a brick wall.
Bhekani Nkomo (31) was found hanging in police cells at Gwanda Police Station on Monday. The suspected murderer was arrested last Saturday afternoon after having been on the run since 22 October and his partner-in-crime cum-lover Sineko Moyo (36) was arrested soon after the incident.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya confirmed the incident saying: "Nkomo committed suicide during the time when he was detained in police cells alone. Nkomo used a rope which he made after tearing a blanket. He tied the rope around his neck and hanged himself on the cell wire stream in the early hours of Sunday."
Then body of the now deceased was ferried to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem and preliminary investigations are underway. It is alleged that Nkomo worked hand-in-glove with his girlfriend to get rid of Dube who was disturbing their marriage plans as he had been married to Moyo for some time.
Dube fell for the trick and Moyo allegedly led him to a direction where Nkomo had laid an ambush. As a result, Dube was struck on the head with a log and stabbed nine times with a spear resulting in him dying on the spot. Moyo was arrested soon after the incident.
Meanwhile, Sineko Moyo who is now a widow and is from Chief Mabhena's area in Nswazi village, Esigodini, appeared before magistrate Innocent Bepura yesterday facing murder charges. She was not asked to plead but was advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
The magistrate remanded her in custody to 13 November. Mr Jefta Nyikadzinashe appeared for the State.
