No fewer than seven illegal miners have been arrested in Sagamu by the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee Task Force (MIREMCO) set up by the Ogun State government.
The illegal miners were apprehended at a site around Sagamu expressway and Oko-Epe rubber plantation.
Speaking on the arrest during which two excavators and five tipper lorries were also impounded, the leader of the task force, Engineer Kehinde Akintomide, said that the exercise would be sustained until sanity was restored to the sector.
He assured that Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s administration was determined to rid the state of illegal miners who take delight in degrading the environment at the expense of the people.
Engineer Akintomide therefore urged those who still operate and have not obtained necessary permission to do so without further delay as anyone caught contravening the law would be dealt with in accordance with relevant sections of the Mining Act.
It would be recalled that some weeks back, the State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, had during a visit to Ijebu Ode ran into some illegal miners and ordered their immediate arrest.
