A 60-year-old man, Alabi Ibrahim, was on Monday remanded in police custody by an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping his 10-year-old step-daughter (name withheld).
According to the Police Prosecutor, Mr Augustine Ozimini, the offence was committed on Sept 18, at about 2 pm, at Soyoye area in Abeokuta.
He said that the accused was the child's stepfather and had allegedly sexually-harassed and raped the 10- year-old severally. "This is not the first time he (Ibrahim) raped the little child, but the mother did not report the incident to the police until now.
"The doctor at the state hospital confirmed that the child was raped and she is still receiving treatment at the hospital," he said.
Ozimini argued that the offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code Law of Ogun, 2006. The accused, who could not take plea due to the nature of the case, was represented by Olu Agboke.
In his ruling, the presiding judge Idowu Olayinka, ordered that the accused be remanded in police till Nov. 29 when the trial would begin on the matter.
He admonished mothers to properly take care of their young daughters and never keep quiet over matters of rape.
