Prisons control Bill divides Reps

Members of the House of Representatives were yesterday divided over a legislation seeking to give state governments control over management of prisons located in their states.

The bill seeks to place control of prisons under the concurrent list of the 1999 Constitution as amended by removing it from one of the 48 items in the exclusive legislative list.

Sponsored by Rep. Leo Ogor, (PDP, Delta), titled “A bill for an Act to alter the provisions of item 48 on the exclusive legislative list of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, to vest the control of prisons in state concurrently with the Federal Government,” could not scale through because of divergent opinions on the bill.

Debate on the bill is billed to continue today.
