Following Tuesday evening bomb threat on a luxury bus along Zaria Road, Kano, northwest Nigeria, the management of New Road Luxury Park, Sabon Gari, has appealed to the state government to provide security escort for luxury buses moving in and out of Kano to further guarantee protection of lives and goods worth several millions of Naira being conveyed by the buses on daily basis.
At about 7 p.m. Tuesday, unknown hoodlums suspected to be members of the Boko Haram threw an object suspected to be Improvised Explosive Device, IED, on a luxury bus owned by Chukwujekwu Transport Limited with registration number XN 149 ENU, painted green and white.
AFP, also reports that two policemen were shot dead later near the scene of the bus attack.
According to the Manager of Chukwujekwu Motors in Kano, Chief Sunday Odum, the luxury bus was on queue at a Joint Task Force checkpoint, near Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH, when unknown hoodlums threw explosives at the 57-passenger capacity luxury bus travelling from Onitsha to Kano.
“The driver told me that there was an explosion which did not penetrate the bus. It only shattered the windscreen and boot of the luxury bus. When we learnt of it, we also mobilized a JTF patrol team from Sabon Gari.
“On getting to the scene of the incident, I saw security men, both the Army, Police and other security personnel who had evacuated the passengers and cordoned off the area. As God would have it, no life was lost and we have not heard of any wounded passenger,” Chief Odum told P.M.NEWS this morning.
As at the time of filing this report, arrangements are being made by security forces and management of New Road Luxury Park to evacuate the bus from the scene of the incident.
Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, who spoke to P.M.NEWS on phone, confirmed that there was such incident involving a luxury bus, but added that his men and other security forces quickly responded to the situation.
“I was at the scene of the incident myself and I must tell you that no explosive was found inside the bus as being speculated. I wish to appeal to media houses to verify facts before going to press so as not to feed the public with falsehood or present reports that could instigate unnecessary tension.
“What happened was that some hoodlums threw an object at the luxury bus which shattered the boot of the bus. No life was lost, none of the passengers got wounded and all the goods in the bus coming from the East were intact. The security is on red alert and we call on all good citizens to move about their businesses without fear.
“I also continue to appeal to Kano residents to provide useful information to the police and other security agencies when they sense any danger. Enough security arrangements have been made to protect lives and property, and we are combing all the flash points to round them up. The house-to-house search embarked upon by the police and JTF has yielded the arrest of over 100 suspects in the last one week,” Mr. Idris stated.
Chief Odum, the manager of the affected Chukwujekwu Motors who is also the Provost of New Road Luxury Park, said the management of the Park would not mind contributing financially so as to ensure total security coverage both inside the Park and for luxury buses moving in and out of Kano.
“We need total security coverage in and out of the Park. Any luxury bus you see moving out and coming into this town carry not less than 70 people, including goods worth several millions of Naira.
We need serious security coverage. We don’t mind if it requires us to contribute a token to security agencies to escort luxury buses in and outside Kano,” Odum stated.
