Lightning Burns 4 Family Members To Death While They Were Eating Dinner

Four members of the same family died after a lightning bolt struck them while they were having supper at their home last week.

Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Leonard Chabata said Mrs Ellen Mudimu (51), her daughter, Linda Mpofu (23), and two grandchildren were burnt beyond recognition.

He said the bolt also hurled Ellen's husband, Tafadzwa, and their daughter, Deflate, out of the hut, leaving them with minor burns.

"I can confirm that the four family members were burnt beyond recognition while two others escaped," said Asst Insp Chabata.

Tafadzwa was still in shock.

"It is like I was dreaming. All I remember is being carried outside as the bolt struck," he said.

Mr Perence Ngwenya - a relative of the deceased - said burial was conducted swiftly the following morning as fellow villagers feared the bolt would strike again.

"We had to bury them without coffins early in the morning. Many people were afraid they would also be struck by the bolt. Some people believe a lightning bolt will always strike the same place a second time," said Mr Ngwenya.
