However the top US diplomat says she is looking forward to leaving the job and taking a break for at least "a little while."

Mrs Clinton made her first public appearance on Wednesday since returning to work at the State Department earlier this week.

She told reporters on Wednesday she has had "the most extraordinary experience" as secretary of state and wants to wrap up unresolved issues before she goes.

She said she would not use the word "retirement" to describe her future plans but rather called it "stepping off the very fast track for a little while."

President Barack Obama has nominated Senator John Kerry, a Democrat, to replace Mrs Clinton, who had long said she would step down after four years.

While battling a stomach illness in December, Mrs Clinton became dehydrated, fainted and suffered a concussion.

Later in the month she was hospitalised for a few days with a blood clot near her brain, which is being treated with blood thinning medication.
