HIV/AIDS Scourge Rocks Delta Communities

Three have been reported dead in the last six months as the dreaded HIV/AIDS take its toll in communities across Delta State. This was even as stakeholders in the state claim remarkable achievement in the fight against the scourge.

Expectedly, a public lecture on basic knowledge of the disease was, yesterday, put together by the state ministry of information as the Speaker, Mr. Ogbodu Bernard, charged participants to carry out free blood tests so as to ascertain their status.

Leadership checks revealed that various communities in the 25 Local Government Council of the State have recorded pockets of screened persons to be “positive” as they were allegedly hit by casual sex that has been treated in the last few years with kid gloves.

Although NACA officials in the state dispelled the report as untrue, Leadership gathered that casual sex in the villages across the state had remained “A way of life” especially among peer groups who still believe in moonlight play where they indulge in unprotected sex.

Enlightenment officials in collaboration with NACA had harped on the need for community residents to practice abstinence or avoid multiple sex partners, and said that if they must be involved, there was need for the use of condom.

In Abraka, Agbor, Oleh and Kwale, unconfirmed sources said the scourge has assumed frightening dimension following the influx of female students who indulge in commercial sex to augment their school fees.
