CSP Arraigned for Allegedly Stealing N12.4m

A Chief Superintendent of Police, Rebecca Okereke, 44, was on Thursday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N12.4 million, belonging to the police.

Prosecutor Etim Nkankuk said the accused, residing at Central Police Band, Police College, Ikeja, was arraigned in court on a two-count of conspiracy and stealing, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Nkankuk told the court that the accused and others at large committed the offence between July and December 2010, while serving at the Police College, Ikeja. While objecting to the bail of the accused, Nkankuk said that the accused had since been dismissed because to the alleged theft.

“It is not in the character of the police to arraign a serving officer. There is in-house disciplinary panel that will handle the matter first. “If it is obvious that the person is to be dismissed, that is only when the officer can be arraigned,” the prosecutor said.

He said the address given by the accused was no longer tenable because that was where she served before her dismissal. Nkankuk said the alleged offence contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State. Okereke pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. Emmanuel Banye, applied for bail for the accused and said that his client was still a serving officer.

According to him, no dismissal letter has been given to her and she was still residing at the said address.

The Magistrate, Mr. F. O. Davies-Abegunde, said the offence was bailable, adding that the accused was presumed innocent until proved to the contrary.

Davies-Abegunde granted bail to the accused in the sum of N3 million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till August 2 for further hearing.
