Security Has Improved In Nigeria — Abdulsalami

Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has expressed satisfaction with the security situation in the country, saying it has improved in recent times.

The former head of state, who spoke in Jos on Sunday after paying a condolence visit to former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, on the death of her father, Sir Paul Kattiems, said as security remained everybody’s concern, citizens of the country had to be involved in keeping the country safe and secure.

He said the citizens could assist security agencies by reporting suspicious characters living amongst them.

Abubakar also had words of advice for media practitioners on the need to always be fair, objective and work in the interest of the country, putting the nation’s interest at heart in their reportage

The former head of state said, “The security situation in the country, I will say, in the last one year, has improved as little bit. It is step-by-step. It is unfortunate that we found ourselves in this situation to the extent that emergency rule was declared in some states. Hopefully, Nigerians will join hands with the government to ensure that we bring peace back to our country. Peace is a responsibility of each and every one of us.

“Like I said, all the perpetrators of mischief live among us. They are our brothers; they are our sisters. We have to take up our citizenship role by reporting such miscreants to the proper authorities.”

Abubakar also reminisced on the political situation since he handed over power 14 years ago.

He said, “Politics anytime is a growing process. We are learning and I think we have come a long way from 1999. On the journey, we have been stumbling, but we are going. We are moving.”

Advising to the media, he said, “You members of the press have a responsibility. You can educate our people and inform them of happenings.”

Earlier, the former head of state had arrived at the Tallens’ house in company with his wife, Fati, and was received by the head of the Kattiems’ family, Albert.

Welcoming the former head of state, the Chairman of Goemai Unity and Development Association, Chief Anthony Homsuk, expressed the family and the Goemai nation’s happiness at the show of solidarity by Abubakar.
