Residents of Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State will live with the hot weather till June when the rains would come, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), has said.
The agency said the rainy seasonwould last till October. Since the scorching sun and the accompanying heat started, residents of Maiduguri, especially those living in densely populated areas have been forced to be sleeping outside their rooms at night.
In its prediction of rainfallfor the 2013 in different parts of the country, NIMET said “it will take time for the rains to come in Maiduguri.”
But the Borno State Meteorological Inspector, Mr BubaSule, said the likely onset for the rainy season in Maiduguri is June 18, 2013 and would end on October 21, 2013.
“We are expecting the rains to start in Maiduguri for a period of 127 days,” he said. Some residents said they were worried about the possible outbreak of cerebra spinal meningitis because of the intense heat.
The commissioner for health, Dr. Salma Anas, had in a recent media briefing, said thousands of the residents had been immunised against the child killerdiseases, meningitis and measles.
