FOUR local government areas in Enugu State have been cut off from the national grid, following vandalisation of the second power line installation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, in Udi local government area.
The 3-KV power line built since 1954 to link the four councils with the New Heaven, Enugu power tranmission station, was vandalized by unknown persons Monday, throwing about 35 communities into darkness and disrupting water supply from Ajali water intake to Enugu urban centre.
Power equipment worth over N5 million were carted away in the incident which officials of Power Holding Comany of Nigeria, PHCN, in Enugu suspected to be a sabotage.
The Udi, Ezeagu, Oji River and parts of Uzo-Uwani local government areas are seriously affected by the vandalism.
Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Distribution Company, Engr. Suleiman Yahaya, who led some security chiefs and officials of the state government to the scene to assess the extent of damage, expressed shock at the magnitude of damage done to the power line.
He wondered why people should embark on such economic sabotage without minding the consequences on the people living in the affected area.
