Nigeria’s Afro King Sunny Ade and other top Nigerian artists heralded Nigeria’s participation in the London Olympics at a sports and cultural expo to mark the beginning of the games.Other artists include Tuface, Asa, Nato C, Kaziah Jones, Seun Kuti, Waje and Ms Waliyah Abiola, the late Chief MKO Abiola’s daughter who showed her stuff as an upcoming artist to beat. The show at the Nigeria Hospitality House at Stratford, the Olympic Games site, on Tuesday night in London.
Some of the fans who spoke commended the initiative and the performances by the artists, which they said, had projected the image of the country in a positive way. “It is amazing to see the abundance of talents coming from Nigeria; these guys are of international standard,’’ Richmond Green, a Briton said.
Also, a delighted Mr Gori Alepute, who has lived in the UK for 30 years, wondered aloud at the abundant talents in Nigeria. “It is really shocking but also delightful to hear some of these young artists like Asa, Kaziah Jones. They are really very good. I am really very happy and proud tonight,’’ Alepute said.
Ms Evelyn Oputu, the Managing Director, Bank of Industry, the organisers of the event, said the initiative “is a spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration of showcasing the very best of culture during the London Olympics.’’
The events which will run from July 25 to Aug 15 will also feature a Night with Prof. Wole Soyinka, with performance of two of his plays, The Lion and the Jewel and The King Must Dance Naked.
