Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Bauchi State, Mr. Julius Bawa, has said the command seized 498kg of cannabis sativa with an estimated value of N7.4m. He said three persons were arrested in connection with the illegal drug haul.
Bawa, who said this while parading the suspects in Bauchi on Wednesday, added that the exhibits, which were concealed inside a truck with number plate XP 67 MUS was intercepted at Azare, following a tip off.
He said the owner of the truck named Olisemeka Wilson claimed to have come from Delta State but resides in Akure, Ondo State, where he engaged in the illegal trade.
Bawa said, “What makes this arrest spectacular is the fact that it is the largest singular seizure by this command since I assume office here as the state commander and indeed, the largest singular seizure ever made in the history of this command.
“The arrest and seizure is coming at a time when all hands are supposed to be on deck towards curbing the security situation in our country. Involvement of people in drugs stands condemnable, considering the fact that drug intake is a catalyst that fuels crime. If this quantum of drugs had penetrated into the society, we could only imagine the multiplier effect crime rate in this state.”
Bawa said another suspect, Benjamin Swande, was also arrested with 13kgs of cannabis sativa, adding that “the suspect implicated his boss and drug baron, one Dogo Sammuel.”
The commander said the suspect committed double offence because he attempted to offer NDLEA operatives N150,000 bribe.
