Insurgency Caused By Wrong Interpretation Of Islam

The Nigerian army has said the wrong teaching and misinterpretation of Islam has helped to fuel the spread of the extremist group, Boko Haram.

Leadership reports that this was stated by Major General Abubakar Yushau who was representing Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff at the opening of a two-day seminar organised by the directorate of Islamic affairs of the Nigerian army. The event took place in Maiduguri, Bornu state on Wednesday, November 25.

He said half-baked and illiterate scholars were responsible for passing distorted messages to their students instead of what is contained in the religion. He said it was important for people to teach the true concept of the religion.

“Muslims are faced with ignorance and wrong interpretation of Islam.

“We have to sensitize the public to embrace the true teachings of Islam, as propagated by the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), as anything outside that does not represent Islam,” he said.

Yushau said: “Miscreants and criminals terrorizing people in the northeast under the guise of Islam have gone out of the real teaching and interpretation of Islam as taught by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his disciples…Such teachings have misled people into wrong acts including terrorism in Nigeria.”

Alhaji Wali Idris, the Wali of Bornu who was represented the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai at the event said the seminar would sensitise people on the true teaching of Islam.

“The seminar is timely and would go a long way in sensitizing people about what true Islam is about.

“Nigerians should be their brother`s keeper irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliations, as all of us belong to the same country and cannot develop without peaceful coexistence. Our doors are always open to the security agencies to seek useful advice and suggestions on any security matter.”

Colonel Shehu Mustapha, the director of Islamic affairs of the army said “despite Islamic warning against extremism and terrorism, some people did not heed the warning, but always embark on distorting the real meaning of Qur`anic verses and Hadith, disseminating wrong information on Islam in order lure ignorant Muslims youths into criminal activities in the name of fighting Jihad”.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian army arrested and is investigating some officers for planning to soil the name of the force and the name of the chief of army staff
