Bauchi State - Over 100 Thugs, Policeman in Child Sex Abuse Arrested

No fewer than 100 suspected political thugs known in Bauchi State as Sarasuka have been arrested by the police as part of its renewed effort to ensure a crime-free state.

A policeman with the Bauchi State command was arrested for sexually abusing children between the ages of nine and 12 years, who he was alleged to have engaged in forceful anal sex.

At least six people have been killed in the last two weeks in bloody clashes by rival Sarasuka groups in the state capital. The six were killed in Karofi Madaki, Wunti Market, and Corner Kwaila as a result of clashes between factions of Sarasuka in the last two weeks.

Seven others were injured in the clashes by the youths who are reported to be under foreign influences.

On Monday evening, a political thug was killed at Wunti market by Sarasuka, who attacked and stabbed him to death.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Hassan Mohammed Auyo told newsmen Friday that the inter-group killings of the thugs were retaliatory.

Eye witness said that the victim was attacked in his Container shop where he sold handset accessory and stabbed severally by his assailant.

"They stabbed him and everybody ran away in panic in the market as he cried for help but a Good Samaritan called the soldiers who came but the assailant fled before the soldiers got there," he said.

Fielding questions from newsmen Friday in Bauchi, the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mohammed Ladan said the thugs (over 100) were arrested by the command with dangerous weapons such cutlasses, knives, among others, and are currently remanded in prison custody by various courts.

"There is no day that at least ten of such are arrested by the different divisions in the state," the CP lamented, saying that the 'Aberdeen' patrol introduced by the command has assisted in arresting criminals citing example of how the police exchanged fire with a gang of hoodlums in Toro leading to the killing and arresting of one respectively as well as recovery of weapons.

Ladan added that the police also through the operation arrested two car thieves and recovered some stolen vehicles and master keys from them, but however lamented that the command was yet to arrest the killers of the five policemen from the command along Gombe road and Kano road.

He said investigation was ongoing, and expressed optimism that the suspect would soon be arrested.

The police commissioner then assured that no stone would be left unturned by the command to check the menace of political thugs in the state, pointing out that the police was working with the state government to ensure that the Sarasuka surrender their weapons and embrace peace.

Ladan who confirmed the sex abuse incident while answering questions from newsmen said "we have the report a division was investigating the matter, but I have directed them to transfer the case to the state Criminal Investigation Department SCID, where the accused is being detained, we are investigating and whatever is the outcome of our investigation we will be made public."
