Amosun Induced Ogun Lawmakers To Defect – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State on Sunday accused the state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, of inducing three of its six lawmakers in the state House of Assembly to defect to the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria.

The Chief Adebayo Dayo-led PDP State Executive has therefore ordered the three lawmakers to vacate their seats, stating that the party had already begun legal moves to retrieve the mandate from them.

The Dayo faction in a statement in Abeokuta on Sunday alleged that Amosun financially induced the PDP lawmakers to defect to the ACN.

While announcing their defection to the ruling ACN on the floor of the House, the three lawmakers, Babatunde Egunjobi, Harrison Adeyemi and Sola Sonuga, had said they were compelled to take the decision due to the inability of the PDP leadership to resolve the perennial crisis within the party since 2008.

But Dayo in the statement argued that the lawmakers’ claims that the PDP in the state was factionalised were mere afterthought influenced by the “largesse” allegedly offered them by the governor.

He said, “The summary of their reasons is that PDP Ogun State has been factionalised and therefore they cannot see their future in the PDP anymore.

“This incoherent excuse is evidently an afterthought, which they hope, will rationalise their dishonest and unethical action.”

Dayo also argued that even the ruling ACN in Ogun State to which they had defected was also suffering from division, adding that intra-party struggles and bickering were the hallmark of democracy across the world.

“Therefore if their reason for leaving PDP is because it consists of factions, then they have taken an uneducated step, which could lead to their political extinction,” he said.

But the ACN Ogun State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Sola Lawal, argued that the former PDP lawmakers took the decision to dump the party because they were fed up with the intractable internal wrangling within the party.

Lawal stated that rather than being induced by the governor or the ruling party, the defectees moved to the ACN because of the achievements of the Amosun administration in the past one year.

He said, “The issue about alleged inducement is balderdash. The lawmakers in question made it clear that they chose to abandon the PDP sinking boat on account of intractable intra-party crisis as well as obvious prodigious score card of the Amosun administration. Which of these can they fault?”
