3 US soldiers killed, 2 wounded in ambush in Niger

- Three U.S troops and one partner nation member were killed in an ambush

- The troops were killed in an ambush which took place 120 miles (193km) north of Niamey, the capital of Niger

- The soldiers were part of a team assisting local forces when they were ambushed

Three US soldiers and one partner nation member have been killed while two others wounded when a joint US-Nigerien patrol was ambushed in southwest Niger near the Mali-Niger border.

A Nigerien security official also said five Nigerien soldiers also were killed in the attack.

According to CNN, two administration officials said the troops who were wounded have been evacuated to the capital, Niamey, and would soon be moved to Germany.

The names of the officers are being withheld as part of the next of kin notification process.

A US defense official speaking to CNN said that operations were underway in the area to locate the attackers.

US Africa Command confirmed in a statement on Thursday morning, October 5, said: "US forces are in Niger to provide training and security assistance to the Nigerien Armed Forces, in their efforts to counter violent extremist organizations in the region."

Meanwhile in a previous report by NAIJ.com, troops of the Nigerian army have recovered various weapons and a motorcycle, after ambushing Boko Haram terrorists in Borno state.

Troops of the 151 and 202 Battalions of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army ambushed the terrorists in separate attacks on Wednesday, October 4.

Troops from the 22 Brigade of Operation LAFIYA DOLE also intercepted Boko Haram terrorists later on in the day.
