“The APC asked to be given the opportunity to study the statement. We shall respond appropriately afterwards,” the party's national publicity secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said in a short message sent to political correspondents.

In the letter, Obasanjo withdrew his support for President Buhari, calling on the president not to seek re-election in 2019.

“Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request. This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us," part of the letter read.

He asked Buhari to honourably dismount from the horse and join the league of former leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.

The former president stated that he was not excited with the way Buhari, who he supported during the 2015 general elections against Goodluck Jonathan, had handled the country. He said even Jonathan had come to realise that he made some mistakes and had publicly regretted them.

Meanwhile, the APC has described the death of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Dahiru Musdapher, as a sad and painful loss.

In a statement sent to journalists today and signed by Mallam Abdullahi, the party urged his family, his kinsmen and Nigeria's judicial community to take solace in the fact that he made an impact while he was alive.

“Aside his distinguished service to the country as the 13th CJN, the party recall his exemplary service as Attorney-General and commissioner for justice, Kaduna state; Chief Judge of Kano State Judiciary and Justice, Court of Appeal, among other important appointments.

“A staunch proponent for judicial reforms in the country, the late Musdapher was a frontline bastion for the entrenchment of constitutional democracy in the country. Indeed, his transition marks the exit of a great legal icon and an astute adjudicator.

“The APC offer deep condolences and pray the Almighty Allah grant his deserving soul eternal rest and the family the strength to bear the loss,” the statement said.

Musdapher died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 23, at 75 years of age.

The cause of his death was not immediately clear but his family members took to social media to break the news.
