Updated: Exchange of gunfire lands Melaye in fresh trouble with police

Senator Dino Melaye is in fresh trouble with the police in connection with the exchange of gunfire between his armed guards and a team of policemen on patrol duty in Ayetoro-Gbede, Ijumu local government area of Kogi state.

In posts on Instagram, Melaye had alleged that the police tried to block his convoy with a grader and six Hilux vehicles belonging to the police and the joint task force parked on a bridge while he was on his way to Yagba east to commission some projects.

He alleged that his convoy had avoided the blockade. In another Instagram post, the senator representing Kogi west said the state government barricaded the road to stop his movement.

Reports have it that as soon as the Melaye’s convoy approached the barricade, there was an exchange of gunfire where the police said a sergeant was hit in the chest.

The development was said to have led to pandemonium in the community as the people in the convoy allegedly abandoned their vehicles and scampered for safety.

Speaking on the incident, the special assistant to the senator on media, Gideon Ayodele, said the convoy was attacked by security operatives that barricaded the road with their vehicles and rained bullets on the vehicle occupied by the senator.

In a post on Instagram, the senator alleged he had written a letter of notice on his tour and program to the Kogi state commissioner of police but no police cover was given him.

However, the Kogi police command has issued a statement that Melaye’s guards opened fire first while the police responded.

The encounter between the police and Senator Melaye comes days after hoodlums reportedly burnt down new classrooms built by the senator and donated to a secondary school in Sarkin Noma, Lokoja, Kogi state.

NAIJ.com gathered that the school buildings, Governor Girls Secondary School, Sarkin Noma and Lokongoma Secondary School in Kogi state were part of the senator's constituency projects set to be commissioned on Thursday, July 19, by Senator Dino Melaye.

The buildings are among sixty nine the senator had reportedly arranged for inauguration as part of his three year stewardship in Kogi west senatorial district.
