Floyd Mayweather was born on 24th February 1977 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., was a former welterweight contender, while his uncles, Jeff Mayweather and Roger Mayweather, were professional boxers. Roger Mayweather is Floyd’s current trainer.
Boxing has been a part of Mayweather's life since his childhood and he never seriously considered any other profession. Mayweather's father spent almost all free time with son at the gym, training and working on his boxing.
When his father was arrested for illegal drug trafficking in 1993, boxing became Mayweather's outlet. He put all his energies into boxing, dropping out of high school.
Mayweather's amateur teammates gave him a nickname "Pretty Boy" because he had relatively few scars, a result of the defensive techniques that his father and uncle Roger had taught him.
At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Mayweather won a bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals of the featherweight (57-kg) division.
In October 1996, Mayweather fought his first professional bout against fellow newcomer Roberto Apodaca, who was knocked out in round two.
His career greatly accelerated and by 2007 he was considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and had 38 undefeated bouts.
Mayweather retired in 2008, but returned to the ring in September 2009.
In 2010, he became the third highest-paid American athlete, with income of more than $60 million for the year.
He is currently undefeated as a professional and is a five-division world champion. He has won ten world titles and the lineal championship in four different weight classes.
In 1998 and 2007, Mayweather was named Fighter of the Year by Ring magazine. He also won the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Year award in 2007 and the Best Fighter ESPY Award in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
In 2000, Mayweather fired his father as manager and later as trainer too. The boxer replaced him with his uncle Roger Mayweather.
In December 2011, a Las Vegas judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge. As in September 2010 his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, filed a domestic battery report against him.
Mayweather, who is the father of four children (two sons and two daughters), resides in a 22,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, seven-bath custom-built mansion inside Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
