The career of this politician has started in 2002. However, there are many controversies and negative opinions on Akpabio. In some sources you may read about his high moral qualities, but the majority of them indicate him being corrupt. Apparently he has left certain imprint in the political and social life of Akwa Ibom State.
He ruled that stated for over 8 years from 2007 to 2015. Presently he still remains the leader of Senate minority in Nigeria. He got the education from the University of Calabar and obtained his degree in law. He started to work and later on became an associate partner of the Paul Usoro and Co. law firm.
A telecom firm EMIS Telecoms Limited has become his second place of employment. The first position in politics was occupied by him in 2002, when he was appointed the Honourable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources in the same state, where he later got the governor’s position.
Throughout his governor’s term in Akwa Ibom State he proclaimed carrying out various reforms. They were supposed to impact the life of people in a positive way. However, in 2015 they led to a huge scandal.
The sums of stolen or wasted money involved in this political and financial scandal are huge. It is assumed the governor laundered or stolen over 500 billion naira. Only in 2014 Godswill and other officials have illegally withdrawn over 22 billion naira, broke them down into smaller amounts and used for their personal purposes.
What is more over 2.3 billion naira were spent by Godswill Akpabio for charter flights. This amount of money was plainly wasted during the three year period (2009-2011). Every luxury trip of Nigerian governor coasted the state budget around 3 million naira.
Presently Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched the investigation of financial malpractices of the governor in the Akwa Ibom State. Sum in question is huge (over 100 billion naira). The fact is the state is the leading one among all the crude oil producers and it receives enormously large allocations of funds from the government budget.
Another fact is that during the Akpabio’s rule Akwa Ibom state has become the most indebted among all other oil producing states. Eventually on May 29 the governor was forced to dismiss the position. However, he refused to vacate the governor’s estate and still hopes to win the next election in Senate. Presently the investigation on his activity in the state continues.
